How to be the answer AI assistants quote.
AI assistants such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity cite pages they can crawl, understand and trust, so the way in is thorough SEO, with clear answer sentences, accurate structured data, open crawl access and named sources.

01
What changed.
People now ask questions and get a written answer, with a few links underneath. Google shows AI Overviews above its results. ChatGPT and Perplexity search the web and cite what they used.
The businesses in those links are the ones the assistant could read, understand and trust. That is the same work good SEO has always asked for, done all the way through.

02
Google says no special tricks are needed.
Google’s own guidance is plain. To appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in search with a snippet. There are no extra requirements, no special schema and no new files to add.
So the fundamentals carry the weight. Pages that Google can crawl, with the important content in text, good internal links and a fast, usable experience, are the pages it can use.
03
Write sentences worth quoting.
An assistant lifts a sentence that answers the question on its own. Put that sentence near the top of the page, in plain words, with the specifics in it.
Then explain. Short sections under clear headings, each one answering a question a customer actually asks, give the assistant more to cite and the reader an easy page to scan.
- Lead with the answer, then the detail
- Use the words customers search, including the town or region you serve
- Answer real questions on the page, in a questions section where it helps
- Keep hours, prices, service areas and policies current

04
Use structured data that matches the page.
Structured data describes the page in a form machines read reliably. It can cover your business, its address and hours, products and their prices, articles and their authors, questions and answers.
Google doesn’t require special markup for AI features, and it asks that structured data match what is visible on the page. Accurate markup still helps every search engine and assistant understand exactly who you are and what you offer.
05
Let the right crawlers in.
An assistant can only cite a page its crawler is allowed to read. Check your robots.txt file, and any firewall or bot protection at your host or CDN, for each of these.
- Googlebot, which covers Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode
- OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces sites in ChatGPT search; GPTBot is separate and only covers model training
- PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links sites in Perplexity answers
- Bingbot, which covers Bing and the answers in Microsoft Copilot
- Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, which let Claude find and read your pages; ClaudeBot is separate and covers training
- Google-Extended, which is a robots.txt setting rather than a crawler: it decides whether Gemini may use your pages, and does not affect Google Search
06
Name your sources, and be one.
Assistants favor pages that show where their facts come from. Cite the standard, the regulation or the study by name, and link to it.
Say who you are as well. A named business with a real address, a clear About page, consistent listings on Google and other directories, and reviews from customers is easier to trust than an anonymous page.

07
Where llms.txt fits.
llms.txt is a proposed convention for a short Markdown file at the root of a site, listing its most useful pages for AI tools to read. It was published as a proposal in 2024 and is still open for community input.
It is cheap to add and can help tools that look for it. Google says you don’t need new AI text files to appear in its AI features, so treat llms.txt as a tidy extra on top of the fundamentals.
08
Speed and structure still decide a lot.
A slow site, or one whose content only appears after scripts run, is harder for every crawler to read. Fast pages with real text in the HTML are read more completely.
Vantage Auto Group, a licensed New Jersey auto broker, is a good example. We built it a library of plain answers to the questions New Jersey car buyers ask, on a fast platform of its own with real text in every page. A year later Google’s AI Overviews cite it 473 times as often, and its clicks from Google are up 45×.
